So I decided to try large 4x4x8 1800 pound bales of alfalfa to try to maximize my feeding costs. I got two bales delivered today for $185 each. They are awesome, nice leafy hay but feeding them is going to be fun.. I have to pull part the large pieces and its not as easy as feeding 3 or 2 strand.. Stay tuned for updates! :)

So how do these large bales maximize your feeding costs? Will you just leave them out to free-feed or will you be weighing the hay each day since those sizes don't come in typical flake sizes?
Maybe you could try using hay nets made from hockey nets and stuff them with grass hay? The horses will eat much slower, just like they do when grazing on pasture and they can eat 24/7.
When I use our hay nets, my horses typically eat 2-3 flakes a day each.
They seem much happier and relaxed, too, because they always have access to hay. And grass hay seems to make my horses act calmer, less spooky, too.
The alfalfa tends to be so messy with all the little leaves that end up falling out of the flakes and getting trampled by the horses, too.
Have you used hay nets before?
Whatever you do, I hope it helps save you some money and is easier, too.

Hi Lisa- I don't know what I was thinking but this isn't maximizing my hay lol- Its a big mess! The pieces are a pain to tear off, and there is huge waste! I will look into hay nets, that would be a awesome idea to hang on the fences.. I will stick with 3 strand or 2 strand going forward- Possibly this summer I will get a huge grass square to put on in the pasture, but buying this hay has been a huge waste of money! :)
ANd I would do grass but its so much more expensive then alfalfa... When I downsize my herd in which I am looking to adopt out/sell 3 horses right now ( a Belgian ( free ) older TB gelding and a quarter horse ) I will have more cash to go to grass I believe.. I would make my horses totally different and worth the money..
