So lately I have been doing a lot, or thinking about the big seal hunt next week. I watched a video about people who are so compassionate about animals that it takes over their lives. Not hoarders for say, but sadness. I have a lot of sadness in my life. I miss my Dad tremendously, and past pets that I have lost. These make permanent scars in my well being. But I move forward and I think so much of my life has been devoted to animals because maybe I have a purpose to speak for them, or at least get the word out.
The seal hunt starts next week. I will try not to read too much on it. But I will spread the word via this site, and the people who read my blogs. Its getting the word out about what is happening in this world with my passions- Stopping horse slaughter, ending animal cruelty, stopping this stupid seal hunt. This year there will be lots of media recording the event. The great HSUS, IFAW, Sea Shepard will be there making a big difference and filming it. It’s by getting the word out to the public that this hunt has no merit. Don't blame the seals on declining cod numbers, as years ago there was 9 million harp seals and lots of cod. Now there are 3 million harp seal and declining numbers of cod.. Do the math Canada. The seals are Global Warming Scapegoats and the Canadian Government needs to open their eyes and the people of this great world need to step up and say something.
I was talking to a friend at work and made a comment about clubbing baby seals. He was like they don't do that.. And I was like yeah, over 275,000 slated for death in 1 week- I don't give details; I am not that depressing as I try to open people’s eyes not think I am nuts.. I am like check out Humane Society, and other sites. This isn't propaganda, this is the truth. Nowhere in this world is there such a horrible hunt where seals are killed in front of each other.. For what? Furs and Oil that many nations have banned.. So I hope the European Union bans seal products and realizes that there is no need for designer furs and a over abundance of oil products...
So that is my purpose today. I know there are lots of other causes out there but this is my cause right now. I know I can make a difference even if people think I am a little nuts. I think Heaven smiles down on me and what I am doing. That is all that matters.. As long as I am making a difference…

If people thought about it, the seals and the cod lived together for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of years before Europeans came to North America - before even Natives came to North America from Asia. Why would the seals be responsible now?
However, one thing I've noticed about Newfies is that nothing is ever their own fault. It's always someone else's fault. And now they're as oil drunk as Albertans, and don't realize that offshore oil platforms (not to mention the inevitable spills that will come with it - how much damage did the Ocean Ranger disaster cause?)

Bog, I like that you brought up the bit about propaganda. When I make a mention of animal cruelty facts to some friends, coworkers, or even family--they are often ignorant to what goes on in the world. Sometimes I receive responses that match my care or concern, while other times (sadly more often), I receive that ridiculous annoyed look of disbelief. "Oh, there goes Shauna on one of her vegetarian/animal activist rants." It is so sad that there are many people in this world that elect to be uninformed or disbelieving because it is easier to live in blissful ignorance.
Humans have progressed so far over the centuries. It is terrible that there are still barbaric people out there that would kill an innocent animal to make a buck. I have a hard time seeing the difference between a hunted animal vs. my pets--or even other humans. We all have a will and desire to survive.
You are right that the best tools are education and our voices. We can share these tragic facts with others to hopefully bring more attention to these kinds of causes. I believe in power-in-numbers in a non-violent fashion. Hopefully some day more can be done to stop these heartless people.
